Software developer Autodesk is to acquire Avid Technology’s Softimage business unit for approximately $35m (£23m).

Softimage was founded in 1986 by Daniel Langlois and is headquartered in Montreal, Canada. The company develops 3D software technology for film, television and games markets.

Its flagship product is Softimage XSI, a 3D animation software package used by leading media and entertainment companies, including Digital Domain, Ubisoft, Sega, Capcom, Animal Logic and The Mill.

Other software that the company offers includes Softimage Face Robot, a lifelike facial animation software package, Softimage CAT, a complete character animation plug-in; and Softimage Alienbrain, a digital asset-management solution for artists.

Autodesk intends to continue developing and selling Softimage’s core product line, while integrating certain Softimage technology into future versions of Autodesk products.

Last month, Avid agreed to sell its Pinnacle PCTV product line and related assets to Hauppauge Digital in a similar move aimed at refocusing its business.
